The comparison between the capacity of the best animals of a certain species and the species' standard capacity allows you to measure its progress: the wider the gap, the more advanced this species is in the game.

Some very wide progress gaps can exist between species, especially depending on the number of farmers who have animals and breedings of this species.

The Bouvier des Flandres is a dog which comes from Flanders. So it's originally from Belgium and France, since there was no national border separating these two countries.

They were originally used as herding dogs, draft dogs and to churn butter. These days, the Bouvier des Flandres is used as a guard dog for properties and farms, as a defense dog and in the police. They are skilled in their sense of smell as well as being very intelligent; they can be used for tracking and anti-poaching. By the fire in their eyes, they show their intelligence, energy and audacity.

This is a dog that is very attached to its master, stocky and short, muscular, very calm and displaying a legendary faithfulness. Its body is powerful and short, its well-proportioned and it's look is proud and frank. Its hair protects it from the harsh climates of its breed's homeland. They should be around 60 cm high very tangled up.

This dog breed was only recognized in 1912. After WWI, it was necessary to build up the livestock again as a huge proportion was killed during the occupation of Flanders. In 1960, an agreement between Belgium and French breeders permanently fixed the criteria of the breed.

It's coat is generally gray, black, or fawn, but is never light. A white star on the chest is acceptable. Its hair is coarse and matted. Its triangular ears stick up straight, high-set and very loose. It is recommended that the hair is cut in proportion to the head's volume. Males are between 62 and 68 cm high at the withers and the females between 59 and 65 cm high. Males weigh between 35 and 40 kilos and females between 27 and 35 kilos. Their heads are massive, with a beard and eyebrows giving them the appearance of an old, mean dog. It's a dog in group 1 (shepherd and mountain dogs, excluding the Swiss Mountain Dog) and section 2 (mountain dogs excluding the Swiss Mountain Dog).
